"About Our Credit Union"

Welcome

CommuniSave is a not-for-profit, financial co-operative, owned and run by its members.  Credit Unions provide a savings and loans service to their members.  Membership of CommuniSave is open to anyone who lives or works in the South West of Birmingham (principally the wards of Bournville, Selly Oak, Kings Norton, Northfield, Longbridge, Weoley and Bartley Green, together with part of Edgbaston ward including the University and QE Hospital sites).
There are over 530 Credit Unions in the UK serving nearly 600,000 members.  Total assets of all UK Credit Unions exceed £500 million.
Since July 2002 Credit Unions in the UK have been regulated by the Financial Services Authority, giving members the same protection as Bank and Building Society customers.  Members savings are safe, since all Credit Unions are part of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. CommuniSave is fully insured against theft and dishonesty.

History

CommuniSave started with a small group of volunteers who formed a steering group to explore the need for a Credit Union in the Selly Oak and Bournville Wards in the summer of 1996.  We were registered as a Credit Union on 13 January 1999, as South Central Birmingham Credit Union Ltd. (SCBCU). In the early days all of the work of the Credit Union was carried out by volunteers, until the appointment of a part-time admin/development officer in February 2003, funded by Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Grants.
On 1 October 2005, after much planning and a name change to South Birmingham Community Credit Union Limited, we merged with three other Credit Unions in South Birmingham (Kings Norton, West Heath and Northfield and Frankley and Rubery Rednal).
In January 2007, with funding from the MG Rover Taskforce we opened our shop in Cotteridge and now employ a full-time Office Manager and five Part-time Staff.

Who Can Join CommuniSave?

Anybody who either lives or works within the ‘Common Bond’ of the Credit Union. This includes most of the following Postcodes: B29, B30, B31, B32, B38 and B45. To check if you are eligible for membership, call us on 0121 486 2035. 

How Do I Join?

Joining CommuniSave is easy.  Simply complete an application form and take or post it to our Office at 1884 Pershore Road, Cotteridge, Birmingham B30 3AS, together with 2 forms of identity.
